Review By Expert: Samsung Galaxy A80: The Phone with 3 Revolving Cameras:

In an effort to face increasing competition from Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo, Samsung has been in a series of reinventions this year with its smartphone lines. Samsung began the year with its first series of Galaxy M phones, followed by a new Galaxy A series in February. South Korea's consumer electronics giant clearly doesn't seem to want to leave a stone unturned in an effort to make its smartphones ready for consumers and competition, as evidenced by the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy A80.

The Samsung Galaxy A80, established to lead the company's revamped Galaxy A series, brings a number of new features to Samsung. We were able to spend some time with the phone before the company's launch event in Bangkok on Wednesday, and here are our first impressions.

This year, with all its new Galaxy A-series phones, Samsung has followed a very specific design language, but the new Samsung Galaxy A80 has become the first phone to break that mold with a very interesting form factor that includes a slider and a Triple Swivel Camera Configuration. What this means is that the same set of cameras is used to take photos and videos from the front and back; they're just flipped, depending on whether you want to take selfies or capture things from the back camera.

Samsung says that the phone has been created for the "Live Age", which is basically a company speech for the current usage patterns where more and more consumers are using their smartphone cameras to express themselves online. With the Samsung A80, Galaxy desire to appeal to these customer by donating a triple rotating rear camera configuration that can be used to capture selfies, take video selfies, regular photos and regular video recordings.

Review By Expert Samsung Galaxy A80: Configuration:

Setting the camera aside for the time being, Samsung Galaxy A80 has other things in its favor. Built with glass and metal, the smartphone looks excellent and feels solid and premium in the hand; however, given the large size of the phone, some consumers may find it difficult to operate with one hand. In addition, the glass front and back of the phone collect fingerprints with ease, but it's just as easy to clean.

The construction quality of the phone is excellent, and Samsung says it has exhaustively tested the sliding and rotating mechanisms and will not create problems for consumers during the life of the smartphone. Obviously, we will test Samsung's claims as part of our full review process at a later stage.

On the front, the Samsung Galaxy A80 has a 6.7-inch (1080×2400 pixels) Super AMOLED Full HD screen, which the company calls "New Infinite Screen. Thanks to the slide-and-swivel camera configuration, there is no notch or other distraction on the front of the phone.

In addition, the phone does not include a headset; instead, the phone's display is used to generate sound, similar to what we've seen previously on the LG G8 ThinQ and Huawei P30 Pro smartphones. The front also houses an on-screen fingerprint sensor.

Review By Expert Samsung Galaxy A80: Triple Camera:

The highlight of the Galaxy A80 is obviously the triple camera configuration. So basically what Samsung has done is place a triple swivel camera module on a slide mechanism. This configuration looks like a normal part of the phone when it's not using the phone's camera to capture selfies; however, as soon as it touches the front camera icon in the camera application, the slider mechanism starts and pushes the camera configuration from its existing position. The camera configuration is immediately rotated towards you. This whole exercise is quite simple and doesn't take much time.

The triple configuration of the camera houses a 48 megapixel primary sensor with an f/2.0 lens, an 8 megapixel secondary sensor with an f/2.2 wide-angle lens (123 degrees) and a 3D depth camera. We will have more information about the camera's capabilities and its real-world performance in our review of the Samsung Galaxy A80.

Samsung Galaxy A80 is powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 730G SoC, which is based on Qualcomm's 8 nm manufacturing process. Adreno 618GU joins Snapdragon 730G to take care of the graphics. According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 730G is designed for mid-range smartphones, so hopefully the Galaxy A80 won't be a bum on the gaming front.

There are 8GB of RAM and 128GB of on-board storage as well. Unfortunately, there is no microSD card slot for expansion of storage. The Galaxy A80 also comes with a 3,700 mAh battery with super fast charging support and a USB type C port. There is no 3.5mm audio connector on the smartphone, which will certainly annoy some potential buyers. The company says it will offer the Galaxy A80 in Ghost White, Angel Gold and Phantom Black colors, although not all color options can be launched in all markets.

On the front of the software, the Galaxy A80 runs on Android 9 Foot with One UI from Samsung, which includes the usual bells and whistles. During our brief use, we found that the overall performance of the phone is agile and fairly fluid, with no visible signs of delay or stuttering.
