The Vivo V15 certainly has a tough task in the face of fierce competition not only from money-value champions like Xiaomi and Asus, but also from Samsung, a giant whose new Galaxy A-series and A-series smartphones are making waves. In the market right now.
Can the Vivo V15 Come out of the shadow of its brother Pro and emerge as a truly capable smartphone in your price range? Can you justify your selling price and potential buyers? Lets discover out in our in depth review of the Vivo V15.
Review By Expert Vivo Smartphone V15: Design:
The Vivo V15 is slightly larger than the Vivo V15 Pro, but has an identical design. With 161.97 × 75.93 × 8.54 mm, it is not the smallest device available and tilts the balance to 189.5 g. Some stretching will be required to reach the touch controls at the top of the screen.

The curved edges give this phone a comfortable feel in your hand, but the back panel can be easily scratched. Within days of use, we noticed that the back panel had small scratch marks on the bottom and edges. The finish is also quite glossy and picks up fingerprint marks and stains easily.
There are three color options: royal blue, frozen black and glamorous red. We have the Glamour Red version for review and its gradient pattern changes between an intense shade of magenta and dark garnet, with bright silver dots on the bottom. The gradient finish extends to the frame of this phone for a uniform look. The Frozen Black variant does not have this top-down color change effect.
If it weren't for its different color combinations, it would be almost impossible to distinguish the V15 from the V15 Pro. This similarity is not necessarily a bad thing, because the Vivo V15 inherits the solid construction quality of its brother Pro. From its appearance, the Vivo V15 boasts a degraded finish on the back panel: Spectrum Ripple Design, in company jargon. Although Vivo uses the same description for both models, but the gradient texture in the Vivo V15 lacks the microwave pattern that makes the Vivo V15 Pro stand out.
As for the quality of construction, the Vivo V15's back panel is made of polycarbonate and so is the frame of the curved strip that surrounds the edges. The device feels solid and we don't notice any flexion when applying force to the rear panel.

Fingerprint sensor positioning is convenient. The large protrusion of the camera is a monstrosity as it stands out prominently. The pop-up module for the front camera is in line with the rear cameras, similar to how the Vivo V15 Pro is placed. The motorized auto-photo camera module enters and exits without problems in a second. It remains to be seen how the mechanism will be maintained after prolonged use, so we advise some caution when using it.

The right side is where the power and volume buttons are located. They are conveniently placed and provide a satisfactory tactile response, although the volume buttons are too rigid. A 'Smart Button' is located on the left, and can be customized to activate the Google Assistant or activate a Google search with a single click. Double-click and long-click actions activate tasks such as launching the image recognition tool and opening the Google Assistant Visual Snapshot page. These shortcuts can be customized to users' preferences.
On top there is a tray for two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. Fortunately, it's not a hybrid tray, which means you won't have to sacrifice dual SIM functionality in favor of more storage. The Micro-USB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone and speaker are located at the bottom. At the top there is another microphone and cutout for the pop-up camera module.
The front is almost completely occupied by the Ultra FullView In-cell Full-HD + 6.53 inch (1080 × 2340 pixels) screen. According to Vivo, this phone has a screen ratio of 90.95 percent and is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Except for the chin at the bottom, the bevels are virtually non-existent, for a design of almost all screens. The headset is located in the upper center.
In addition to a Vivo V15 unit, the box includes a Micro-USB cable, an 18W charger, a hard silicone sleeve, a headset, a SIM ejection tool and some papers.
Review By Expert Vivo Smartphone V15: Specifications and Features:
The Vivo V15 has very fantastic mix of hardware. As mentioned above, it contains an Ultra FullView In-Cell Full-HD + 6.53 inch (1080 × 2340 pixels) screen. We would have liked a Super AMOLED panel like the Vivo V15 Pro, especially if we consider that the Samsung Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A30 both have Super AMOLED panels despite having a significantly lower price.

The Vivo V15 works with the octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 SoC at 2.1GHz, which has four Cortex-A73 ARM cores for all heavy-duty and four other energy-saving Cortex-A53 cores. While this is a fairly capable processor, the price of Vivo V15 guarantees something more solid. As a reference, the Realme 3, includes the same processor MediaTek Helio P70, but costs almost a third of the selling price of Vivo V15.
Review By Expert Vivo Smartphone V15: Runs FunTouch OS 9 Based on Android 9 Foot: |
Along with this SoC, you get 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, which can be extended up to 256 GB with a microSD card. The Vivo V15 is available in a unique configuration.
Apart from its striking aesthetics, the main attraction of the Vivo V15 Pro is its image hardware, especially its 32 megapixel trigger f / 2.0, which is the same as the Vivo V15 Pro. The rear configuration consists of a 12 megapixel main camera with a 1/2.8 inch sensor and a f/1.78 aperture. It is accompanied by an 8 megapixel wide-angle camera with an aperture of f/2.2. It is described as having a field of view of 120 degrees; however, it actually captures 108 degree wide shots after taking into account lens distortion. There is also a 5 megapixel depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.4.
For connectivity, you get 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth 4.2, a Micro-USB port with OTG support, GPS/A-GPS and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The battery is a 4,000 mAh unit and this phone supports the fast charging of Vivo's dual engine. The use of a Micro-USB port on the Vivo V15 is surprising and disappointing, as even phones that have a significantly lower price have already adopted the USB Type-C standard.
The on-screen fingerprint sensor of the Vivo V15 Pro does not reach this more affordable model, so there is a fingerprint sensor mounted on the back of the Vivo V15.
As for the software, Vivo V15 runs FunTouch OS 9 based on Android 9 Foot, and our review unit had the January security patch. There's a steep learning curve if it comes from Android, especially when it comes to finding what you're looking for in the Settings application.
There is no app drawer, so you must scroll through the home screens to see all your apps. A scroll to the right on the first home screen will open the Smart Launcher, where you can find weather task cards, a task list, application shortcuts and news headlines. There is a universal search bar that can be used to find an application, jump to a system configuration, or perform a quick web search.
The Vivo V15 comes with a ton of pre-installed applications, including both internal and third-party applications such as Gaana, Facebook, Paytm, Newspoint, UC Browser and PhonePe. FunTouch OS 9 also has some interesting features of its own. For example, the message display split function displays incoming message notifications as floating bubbles that you can touch to instantly open the message in a split-screen view for multiple tasks.
The Vivo V15 comes equipped with a 32 megapixel pop-up auto-photo camera.
There are a host of other ingenious features like Smart Lock, Smart Mirroring and Smart Motion. FunTouch OS 9 also offers two power-saving modes. In lower Power mode, auto optimizes CPU speeds, it automatically decrease screen light, disables Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and takes other steps to reduce power consumption. The "Extreme Power Save Mode" closes all activities and applications except Phone, Messaging, Contacts and Clock. You can read about FunTouch OS 9 in more detail in our review Vivo V15 Pro.
Review By Expert Vivo Smartphone V15: Performance, Cameras and Battery Life:
Before delving into the performance of the Vivo V15, let's talk about the screen. Unlike the Super AMOLED panel in the Vivo V15 Pro, the Vivo V15 has a 6.53 inch cell LCD screen, but the resolution remains the same at 1080 × 2340 pixels. The color output is good and the text looks sharp in it. The viewing angles are also decent with minimal color change when viewed from different angles.

Thanks to the full screen design of this phone, playing and watching videos at 60 fps high definition was nice. The default color profile of the Vivo V15 is slightly on the cooler side, but you can adjust the color temperature to your liking. There is also an option to adjust the color tone to reduce eye fatigue, which can be activated manually or programmed.
While the full-screen design looks good, rounded corners tend to hide screen content, especially in applications that do not support scaling. You can live with it or disable full-screen scaling per application, but doing so will add ugly black bars on each side while playing and watching videos in landscape mode.
The Vivo V15 screen could also have been better in terms of brightness. Indoor use of the device poses no problems, but the readability of sunlight is not as good as one would expect. The videos and photos seemed faint, even with the brightness elevated to the 100 percent mark. Another disappointment is the lack of certification Widevine L1, something that was also missing in the Vivo V15 Pro. This means that you will not be able to stream HD videos on Netflix or Amazon.
The Vivo V15 can record videos in slow motion, but cannot capture videos in 4K
We found that the MediaTek Helio P70 is a capable processor. In our day to day, we did not find any deficiency. The usual social media and productivity applications were launched quickly, and switching between them was also a butter process. The 6GB of RAM certainly helps to run several applications in the background.
Reaching the performance of the Vivo V15 in the synthetic benchmarks, it obtained a score of 1,46,753 in AnTuTu. It also scored 1,511 and 5,767 points in the single-core and multi-core Geekbench tests, respectively. As for the most graphic-intensive tests, the latest Vivo smartphone achieved 35 fps in the GFXBench T-Rex test and put 11 fps in the GFXBench Manhattan 3.1 test. These scores are similar to those of the Oppo F11 Pro, which is not surprising, as both smartphones are powered by the same processor and have the same amount of RAM.
However, the performance of the game was not as impressive. We tried the Vivo V15 game options with PUBG Mobile, Asphalt 9: Legends and Modern Combat 5. PUBG Mobile was set to the default Medium by default, with the average frame rate and balanced graphics. While the experience was almost fluid, we had to deal with sporadic delays and stutterers. Asphalt 9: Legends ran smoothly, but increasing the visual quality to High resulted in a large number of frame drops and stuttering.
FunTouch OS 9 offers a feature called Game Cube that aims to improve the gaming experience, but we didn't see any noticeable improvement in the game before or after adding a title to the Game Cube list. Another feature focused on games is Game Assistant, which aims to optimize the CPU and RAM for a better experience, and provides quick access buttons to block notifications and control call behavior.

A notable omission is the lack of facial recognition. Both the Vivo V15 and Vivo V15 Pro feature 32 megapixel autophotos housed in motorized pop-up modules, but the latter supports facial recognition, while the former inexplicably loses it.
A spokesperson for Vivo confirmed that the Vivo V15 is not compatible with this security feature, and there is no information on whether it can or will be enabled with a software update in the future. The fingerprint sensor, on the other hand, is impressively fast and unlocks the device in less than a second.
In terms of camera performance, the Vivo V15 proved to be quite competent. The user interface of the camera is practically the same as that of the Vivo V15 Pro. The shortcuts for document scan mode, Pro mode, AI beauty and AR stickers are at the bottom, while the controls for wide-angle mode, scene selection and portrait mode are neatly arranged on the shutter button. At the top, one can find the controls for the setup section, portrait lighting effects, live photos and HDR mode.
The 12 megapixel main camera employs a 1/1.28 inch sensor with 1.28 micron pixels and an aperture value of f/1.78. Vivo claims that the main camera has 24 million photosensitive units and employs Dual Pixel Focusing technology to deliver brighter photos with greater clarity. The images captured by the Vivo V15, in fact, turned out to be quite detailed, exhibiting eye-catching colors and commendable surface details.
The Vivo V15 really shines when it comes to macro shots. Subjects with rich color profiles were captured in great detail. The shadows turned out to be vibrant, the gradients were decent and the surface features, such as the ridges, were also distinguished when approached. Despite the close-ups captured by Redmi Note 7 Pro. They are better, those captured by Vivo V15 can stand on their own. Daylight shots also turned out to be sharp with good dynamic range and sharpness.
There are also some flaws. We noticed occasional color bleeding along the edges in macro shots, especially if the focused object had a bright color. In addition, some daylight photos turned out to be a little off and exhibited faded colors, especially those captured under severe light.
Users may particularly miss having a night mode. The shots we took in low light exhibited granular textures and had a considerable amount of noise. The HDR mode tries to compensate for this with greater saturation and contrast, but ends up softening the details. In comparison, Redmi Note 7 Pro did a much better job of retaining details and highlighting colors.
As for portraits, they turned out well, with good depth. We liked the possibility to adjust the intensity of the blur effect before and after taking a picture. The Vivo V15 cameras do a good job of blocking the focus and preserving the details, but the edge detection could have been a little better. We often found that the extremities of a focused object were mistaken for error when the intensity of the effect increased. The blur effect turned out to be particularly uneven with complex subjects such as vines.
A dedicated wide-angle camera is certainly a clear advantage of Vivo V15 , as it allows users to capture wide panoramas. Fortunately, we did not see any barrel distortion as we did with some of the wide-angle shots captured by the V15 Pro. Instead, we found that the objects look slightly flat, as if they were tilted inward. This was only noticeable with objects that have a sharp contour.
Video recording resolution is maximum in full-HD with frame rate set at 30 fps. It's a bit disappointing that the Vivo V15 can't record videos in 4K or Full HD at 60 fps. The recordings turn out to be decent, but the lack of stabilization on this phone means that there are many tremors and shakes in the videos. Slow motion video recording is also on the table, with the resolution set at 1280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps.
The 32 megapixel front camera somewhat redeems the shortcomings of the rear cameras. The autophotos captured by the front camera had an impressive amount of detail, with good color reproduction and sharpness. Edge detection was also quite accurate, and the studio's lighting effects help make the shots compatible with social networks by allowing you to add filters and color effects.
AI Beauty Mode offers a ton of beautifying options, such as smoothing the skin, lightening the skin, thinning the jaw line and enlarging the eyes. There are also whole-body beautifying tools that do things like reducing the waist and making the legs look thinner and longer. While facial beautifying filters do their job as promised, they tend to change the color profile of the entire image. For example, the skin lightening filter increases the ISO that affects the entire frame.
Battery performance is an area where the Vivo V15 rises above its brother Pro. The 4,000 mAh battery easily lasted us during a day of demanding use. During our regular use, which involved being connected to a Wi-Fi network all day, using social networks and productivity applications, listening to music with wireless headphones for at least a couple of hours, about an hour of play and some calls. - the Vivo V15 still had about a 30-35 percent load at the end of the day. In our HD video loop test, the Vivo V15 lasted 15 hours and 22 minutes.
As for the endurance figures, a 30-minute session of PUBG Mobile with maximum brightness led to a 9 percent battery drop. Vivo ships the device with an 18-watt charger that carries the battery from 0 to 40 percent in 30 minutes, and up to 75 percent in just one hour. Charging this phone to its maximum capacity took about 1 hour, 40 minutes. We notice a reduction in charging speed once the battery reaches the three-quarter mark.
Review By Expert Vivo Smartphone V15: Conclusion:
The Vivo V15 impressed us with its long battery life, beautiful design, solid construction quality and capable front camera. However, it also has its fair share of deficiencies. It's still stuck with a Micro-USB port, can't transmit HD video from services like Netflix, and its user interface needs a little refinement. In addition, low-light photography is below the average of a phone at this price.
Unfortunately for Vivo, its competition has more to offer at significantly lower prices. The Redmi Note 7 Pro has a more powerful processor, better rear cameras, larger battery, USB port type C, impressive construction quality. Even the Realme 3, works with the same processor as the Vivo V15 and is a good budget offer.
The Vivo V15 also faces tough competition from the Samsung Galaxy A50 (Review), which boasts a striking design, a beautiful Super AMOLED screen, triple rear cameras and a fingerprint sensor on the screen. Then there's the Oppo F11 Pro, which offers similar specifications that include a pop-up front camera, but better camera performance, for a slightly higher retail price. The Poco F1 and Asus ZenFone 5Z also offer flagship level specifications at approximately the same price point.
To round things off, the Vivo V15 has a few things in its favor, but faces numerous competitors who offer more for the money. Even if you really like the idea of a pop-up camera, you can get much better hardware and overall performance elsewhere.
