A little over seven months have passed since the launch of the Redmi 6 series, but in the world of smartphones it's a lifetime. The new device, the Xiaomi Redmi 7, has arrived. New features, such as water droplet notches and degraded designs, have become popular and competitors don't stand still. Xiaomi is not the only company that constantly strives to improve the specifications and features of low-cost phones.

The recently revitalized Samsung, in particular, represents a major threat with the A series and M series models at reasonable prices, which have been selling quite well since their launch. No wonder, then, that Xiaomi has already updated its sub-Rs. 8,000 offerings.

The recently announced Xiaomi Redmi 7 is an all-rounder that should be attractive to anyone. It seems to offer almost everything buyers could want, and the focus is on overall value rather than on an important feature. Interestingly, Xiaomi has not released the complementary models Redmi 7 Pro or Redmi 7A, at least not yet. In this review, we focus on Redmi 7, and let's see if Xiaomi has managed to deliver enough to stay ahead of Samsung, Honor, Realme and other competitors.

Review By ExpertDesign Xiaomi Redmi 7:

Many of Xiaomi's previous phones have been very similar, but Redmi 7 breaks the mold. The company has completely abandoned the metallic look of Redmi 6 and has adopted glossy multi-colored plastic just like many of its competitors. There are three colors to choose from, the plain Eclipse Black, which we got for your review, and the more eye-catching Comet Blue and Lunar Red.

Review By ExpertDesign Xiaomi Redmi 7:
The last two have color gradients on their back panels. Xiaomi calls this their 'Aura Smoke' look. The Comet Blue option has a dark purple color that fuses with the bright blue, while the lunar red is black at the top and red at the bottom. While not everyone will love this, the overall effect is a little more subtle than some of the other designs we've seen recently. If you don't like these finishes, you can use the dark translucent plastic cover that comes in the box.

Phones have been growing, and Redmi 7 is no exception. Its 6.26 inch screen is much larger than the 5.45 inch screen on Redmi 6, but that's not just for the thinner edges. The Redmi 7 is significantly larger than its predecessor in all dimensions, and also heavier. At 180 gy 8.47 mm thick, this phone is a handful, and you'll feel its weight in your pocket as you walk. Nor is it easy to reach every corner of the screen with just your thumb.

With this generation, even the low-cost Redmi 7 gets a modern "dot" notch, though we must say that if you're looking for a screen with no edges, this phone doesn't fit that description. The good news is that Xiaomi has used Gorilla Glass 5 for the screen, which should give you some peace of mind.

Review By ExpertXiaomi Redmi 7 Looks Like A Modern "Dot" Notch:
The back of this phone is made of molded plastic, which Xiaomi says was "finished with a nano-spray". Our smooth black review unit was shiny and highly reflective, and had no noticeable texture. Unfortunately, it got very dirty with fingerprints and stains when we unpacked this phone. We also noticed that dust and small fibers tend to stick to the back. It is impossible to keep the Redmi 7 looking fresh, which is a shame. We saw significant scratches and wear after less than a week of careful handling.

The edges where the glossy back panel meets the matte plastic frame are not perfectly smooth and this phone is a little uncomfortable to use. Fortunately, the fingerprint sensor on the back and the power and volume buttons on the right are within reach.

There is a very thin headset just above the notch on the front camera, and the sensors are hidden. A small white LED embedded in the chin under the screen lights up when the phone is charging and turns off when the battery is full. The rear dual camera module protrudes just a little bit and doesn't interfere with anything.

At the top of this phone, you will find a 3.5 mm headphone jack and an infrared emitter to control the devices with. A single tray on the top left can hold two Nano-SIM cards and a microSD card, which is always good to see. Of the two grids at the bottom, only one is actually a speaker. We would have liked to have a USB type C port, but we can't complain about using the Micro-USB standard at this price, and at least many people will be able to recycle old cables.

Not everyone will like the plastic body and the color gradients, or the fact that this phone is quite bulky and difficult to handle. If you love big smartphone, you will find the Red-mi 7 much more attractive than its predecessors at the same price.

Review By Expert: Xiaomi Redmi 7 Specifications And Software:

At the heart of the new Redmi 7 is a Socom Qualdrm Snapdragon 632, which is a considerable improvement not only on Redmi 6's MediaTek Helio P22, but also on Redmi 6 Pro's Snapdragon 625. It has eight of Qualcomm's Kryo 250 CPU cores running at up to 1.8 GHz, and integrated Adreno 506 graphics.

Xiaomi has released two variants of Redmi 7, and both have 32GB of eMMC storage. The only difference is the price.

The 6.26 inch's big screen has the resolution of 720×1520, and an aspect ratio of 19:9. Xiaomi says you get 84 percent of the NTSC color gamut, which is decent enough for a low-cost phone. There's a 4000 mAh battery that's a big 3000 mAh increase in the Redmi 6, and although Qualcomm's Fast Charge is not explicitly compatible, the included charger has a 10W capacity.

Redmi 7 supports 4G and VoLTE on both SIM cards, as well as single-band Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS. There is an electronic compass plus the usual accelerometer and ambient light sensor, but there is no gyroscope. Our diagnostics showed that this phone is compatible with Widevine L3 DRM, not L1 for high definition video transmission.

Our review unit was running MIUI 10.2 on Android 9 Foot. During the initial setup process, there is an option to disable "Wallpaper Carousel" stories on the lock screen, which may include some ads and sponsored content. You will see a different item each time you unlock your phone. Interestingly, this is exactly the same platform we've found on Samsung's latest phones. It is powered by a third party application called Glance.

Review By Expert: Xiaomi Redmi 7 Specifications And Software:

We saw fewer cheeky ads and better designed snippets than we did when we reviewed the Samsung Galaxy M20, but it's still annoying. When disabled, there is a permanent icon on the lock screen that takes you to an option to re-enable it.

MIUI does not give you the option of an application drawer, so all icons are on the home screens. If you go directly from the first home screen, you will come to a page called App Vault that has several panels that include shortcuts to specific tasks within certain applications. There are also "recommended applications" announcements, contests, and application integrations here. The MIUI task switch has a mosaic design that is actually quite practical.

The Second Space feature is a separate profile for applications and private data, which you can delete and restore at any time. Dual Apps allows you to run two instances of almost any application, not just messengers.

We notice that when you install any application from the Google Play store, an "application verifier" screen will appear with an advertisement. The default Facemoji keyboard offers a lot of ASCII text effects, emojis, GIF, stickers and themes. There is a My Apps store and several top applications, and as we've seen before, there are ads in many of them.

The Music application allows you to stream songs from Hungama without any account setup process. An application called Security has a virus scanner and some privacy tools, but also for some reason includes a "game speed boost" and battery and storage controls that are usually found in the Settings application. Of course, there are ads everywhere, including full-screen interstitial.

Review By Expert: Xiaomi Redmi 7 Performance, Battery Life, And Cameras:
We received the 3GB RAM version of Redmi 7 for review, so our experiences could be better than those of people who buy the base variant, which of course is more affordable. Besides the announcements in all MIUI, we found the Redmi 7 easy to use, but with a bit of buggy.

Review By Expert: Xiaomi Redmi 7 Performance, Battery Life, And Cameras:
Sometimes there was a very small delay in calling and scrolling through the application switch, probably due to the thumbnails of all the applications running in cache. A rare but strange problem was that notifications sometimes disappeared in less than a second, making them impossible to read.

The screen is a bit too reflective, but it is decent in terms of quality. With such a big screen, videos and games look great, but the text is a bit fuzzy. The colors and viewing angles are fine, but the sunlight readability wasn't very good.

We were impressed with the loudspeaker, which can push the sound loud without distortion. It's great for voices in video and music, but of course there's not much bass or richness in the sound. As standard for Xiaomi, no headphones are included.

Our benchmarks showed great performance improvements compared to the Redmi 6 series. AnTuTu gave us 103,574 points and the single core and multi-core Geekbench scores were 1,247 and 4,333 respectively. Redmi 7 scored 511 points in 3DMark's Sling Shot Extreme test and 14,458 points in Ice Storm Unlimited. The GFXBench T-rex and Manhattan 3.1 tests ran at 36 fps and 14 fps respectively.

Asphalt 9: Legends appeared on the Google Play Store as incompatible with this phone, so we couldn't prove it. PUBG Mobile worked well in the Medium preset by default. We noticed that the top of the back of the phone warmed up a little after a few rounds.

The 4000mAh battery in this phone lasted an impressive 17 hours and 9 minutes in our HD video loop test. With informal use, which includes a lot of Web browsing plus a little photography, gaming and video streaming, we managed to spend a full day and still had about 30 percent left at night.

The Redmi 7 has the twelve mega pixels f/2.2 primary rear big camera with 2 mega pixel's depth sensor. It does not have an additional zoom or wide-angle lens, but the application has AI to detect scenes and adjust the camera settings automatically.

Apart from the usual Pro and Portrait modes, there are menus in photo and video modes with additional options including Tilt-Shift, Beautification, Selfie Group, Time-lapse and Google Lens. You can take bursts by pressing and holding the shutter button, and there's even a setting that lets you choose between average, center-weighted, and spot metering.

We liked how our photo samples came out. The shots we took in bright sunlight had sharp focus and subtle details within the focused area, although anything more than a few feet away seemed much poorer. Redmi 7 handled exposures well in scenes with bright light and shadow, but would have liked a little more vitality and a touch of color.

Review By Expert: Xiaomi Redmi 7 Performance, Battery Life, And Cameras:
We were pleasantly surprised by the way the shots came out in low light, and even the colors were relatively well preserved. However, there was a lot of noise and these photos didn't really look good when we got close. There's also a lot of motion blur and you can expect bright areas to be overexposed thanks to the slow shutter.

Videos can be recorded at 1080p 60 fps and you can choose between the most compatible H.264 codecs and the most efficient H.265 codecs. The clips we recorded seemed a bit boring and there was a lot of shaking. The detail was poor in the HD videos recorded at night. Beautification is applied automatically when using the 8 megapixel f / 2.0 front camera, and is too aggressive.

Review By Expert: Xiaomi Redmi 7:Conclusion:
Xiaomi has done a lot to improve the Redmi series, and the new Redmi 7 offers better features and specifications, as well as a more updated look than Redmi 6. However, there are some steps backwards, we don't like the RAM reduction in the base model and the lack of a 64 GB storage variant.

As for the competition of this phone, we have the Realme 3, Samsung Galaxy M10, and Asus Zenfone Max M2 or ZenFone Max Pro M1. Xiaomi seems to have an advantage in terms of features and overall specifications at its price. However, it is likely that experience with the software, in particular all the advertising, will put many people out.

The Redmi 7 offers remarkable upgrade's over the Redmi 6, including a large HD + 6.26 inch screen.
And it has a very much strong processor & plastic body with degraded design options.
